Named for a fictional character, Maya Marie Weeks, MFA ’12, writes to prove that she actually exists. Born and raised on the central coast of California, she has lived as far north as Copenhagen, Denmark, and traveled as far south as Santiago, Chile. Oakland is the farthest she has ever lived from the ocean. These works are excerpted from the collection of poems that earned her Mills’ 2012 Mary Merritt Henry Prize for outstanding poetry by a graduate student.
